Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the reliability of computer-based training programs for the purpose of dental caries survey.

Methods: The authors developed a new computer based program to assess the dental caries status according to WHO diagnostic criteria. Participants were recruited from the School of Dentistry, Seoul National University. Twenty sophomore dental students were enrolled in this study. General computer laowledge was not measured, but no problems related to this were reported in the course of the study. The study employed a pretest-intervention-post-test design to compare the effects of computer-based training. Intra- and inter-examiner reliability were investigated using Kappa Index before and after training.

Results: Of the total participants, 85% completed the program. The inter-examiner reliability of the post-test was higher than that of pre-test(p < 0.05) using the Kappa statistic. The intra-examiner reliability of the post-test was higher than that of pre-test(p ( 0.05) using the Kappa statistic.

Conclusions: This study suggests that computer-based training program for the dental caries survey
could be a substitute models of traditional visual assessment calibration training.
